PTA PROGRAMS

Reflections
National PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual arts Reflections Program. The program offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition. Students in preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to create and submit works of art in four areas: literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts (which includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making, and collage). In its more than 30-year history, the program has encouraged millions of students across the nation and in American schools overseas to create works of art. The Reflections Program was started in 1969 by then Colorado PTA President Mary Lou Anderson.

Each year, the Reflections Program challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme. Themes are selected from thousands of ideas submitted by students to the National PTA's Reflections Program Theme Search. Past themes have included "Dare to Discover...," "If I Could Give the World A Gift...," "Imagine That...," and "Exploring New Beginnings..."

Students participate in the Reflections Program by submitting entries to their local PTA or PTSA. Any PTA/PTSA in good standing is eligible to sponsor a Reflections Program.

The Wake County PTA Council supports the Reflections Program by training PTA units on the program at its Parent Leadership Conference.  Detailed info rmation about this year’s program, the theme and associated deadlines will be available at the training.

Character Education

Each PTA unit is encouraged to create a character education committee and/or designate a member to serve as a liaison to the Council's character education committee. This committee submits articles to the Council and unit newsletters, offers support to school staff and volunteers as needed, encourages modeling the eight character traits, and assists with school programs to increase awareness of character education.

Character Education is founded on eight core character traits, one associated with each month of the school year.

Awards - is now called PTA UNIT CELEBRATION
For the 2007-2008 year , the Wake County PTA Council has "revamped" the Awards Program and instead wants to celebrate the accomplishments of all member units at its annual spring meeting. Rather than competing for individual awards, this celebration will provide an opportunity for each PTA unit to spotlight a program or activity as well as outstanding volunteers.

What does this mean?

NO award nomination forms
NO begging for nomination letters
and NO deadline for submissions! Yea!

What is an awards chair to do?
First, RELAX.
Then, start thinking about what great programs or activities your PTA is doing that you’d like to celebrate and share with other units this spring.
